THE VERSE
[6] Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with the saving might of his right hand.
[7] Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
[8] They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright.
Where do you find help in the day of trouble? When chaos ensues around you, what stabilizes you? In Psalm 20, considered a “royal psalm,” King David speaks with great confidence about where he puts his trust in times of trouble.
In the prior five verses, the people of David’s kingdom had been praying for and speaking a blessing over their king. David was a figurehead for the whole nation. As David went, so did Israel! 7 times the people cried out to God for David. They asked God to answer them, to protect and help their king.
In verse 6, it’s almost as if the corporate blessing is interrupted by their leader’s confident voice as he says, “Now that I know…” Though David seems to be heading into battle, he’s not shaking in his boots but is calm and grounded. Why? Verse 6 tells us that God saves his anointed (aka David). God had heard the prayers of the people and would answer them. God’s strong right hand wasn’t motionless at His side or busy elsewhere, but was actively at work to help and save David!
Because of this, David’s confidence wasn’t in the strength of his army (chariots and horses) but rather the name of God. What does it mean to trust in God’s name? Behind God’s name was His Person and His promises. David knew his strength on the battlefield wasn’t Israel’s military prowess or the size of their weapons compared to their opponents, but rather a simple trust in God and all that He was and said He’d do for them. They knew their enemies would eventually collapse and fall, but they would rise and stand upright.
Back to our initial question: where do you find help in times of trouble? How have you found trust in “chariots and horses” instead of God? What might it look like to come to God today and trust His name instead? If that feels hard to you today, confess that to Him! May you, like David, know that God’s heart and posture are toward you today and that His right hand is full of saving might being exercised on your behalf right now!
The Song + The Artist
This song was written by Joel Limpic and then recorded in Aaron Strumpel’s studio in Lafayette, CO with some friends. Joel shared a bit about the song:
I wrote this song a while ago, but it was great to come in and work on it afresh with Aaron in the studio! We sent the song to our friend Braydon who wrote some beautiful electric parts layered over it… The chorus is so fun to belt out as a declaration. Hope this song helps you engage with the truths of this psalm!
