THE VERSE

[15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. [16] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

What a wonderful truth to consider this season of Advent and soon-to-be-arriving Christmas! The eternal Son of God comes to us as Jesus, the image of the invisible God. Linger on that phrase: “the image of the invisible God.” In Greek, it tells us He’s the “eikon” of God, or the icon of Him. He bears His likeness and resemblance; a copy, if you will. When a son looks just like their father, people say, “He’s the spitting image of His father.” That’s what Jesus was to the Father! He is the invisible God made visible to all who would see Him. As I hear of this, I can’t help but think of Jesus' interaction with Philip in John 14:8–9.

[8] Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” [9] Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

Want to know what the Father is like? You don’t have to guess anymore. Look to Jesus! Give yourself to know, love, and cherish all Jesus came to teach and do and reveal to us about the Father. Why should you trust Him? Verse 16 tells us. Everything that exists was ultimately created by Him, through Him, and for Him. He is the source of creation, the means of creation, and the goal of creation. He’s infinitely worthy of our worship, yet He’s immanently near. Just look to the manger in which He lay. He is Emmanuel, God with us. Rejoice!
