THE VERSE

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations…

We live in an information age. For any burning question, all one must do is simply reach into their pocket, pull out their cell phone, and ask Google. What a wild thing that we can know nearly anything about everything in 10-15 seconds! In Deuteronomy 7:9, Moses calls us to a different sort of “knowing” that goes far beyond the Internet. He calls us not to visit a webpage but rather invites us into a life pursuit; a sort of knowledge that’s more experiential than informational. What does Moses want us to know? He wants us to know intimately Who God is and how we are to relate to Him.

In the first half of Deuteronomy 7:9, Moses calls us to sit with the reality that God isn’t some nameless god amongst many other gods. He is Yahweh who revealed Himself and tied Himself to Abraham through a covenant (read about it in Genesis 15). He’s also the same God who freed Israel from 400 years of slavery in Egypt, leading them into the Promised Land! He alone is God. In a sea of “lowercase g” gods who all scream out for our allegiance and attention, there is a God who declares to be eternally allegiant to us. Moses calls us to become acquainted with this reality and not merely have it be a fact that sits on a mental shelf gathering dust! He wants us to taste it and rejoice in it, allowing it to transform our understanding of the world.

The amazing thing about His commandments is they’re about maximizing our joy and true humanity.

The second half of this verse invites us to not only celebrate but also image this sort of love and covenantal faithfulness back to God! The story’s not over. As we come to know firsthand this faithfulness in God, it inevitably changes us. His covenant-keeping and steadfast love is prior to ours, but begs for reciprocity. God loves us and keeps covenant with us, and in turn we’re invited to similarly love God and keep His commandments. The amazing thing about His commandments is they’re about maximizing our joy and true humanity. God’s commandments aren’t given to suppress our pleasures, but rather enhance them because God knows what’s truly good and life-giving.

If you know Israel’s story, you’ll know they weren’t able to keep their end of things. They strayed both from the God they loved and from His commandments. They were, in the words of the famous hymn, “prone to wander.” Because God never wanders from His commitments and promises made provision for their unfaithfulness ultimately by sending His faithful Son to die the death they deserved. The same is true for us today. Though our unfaithfulness stubbornly persists, so also God’s covenant and love persists to a thousand generations! There is no end to it. Having a hard time believing that’s true? Look to the face of Jesus, gazing at you with eyes of compassion and gentleness. Look to the body of Jesus, crucified for you. Listen to the voice of Jesus, declaring the Father’s love to a thousand generations. Know that God and then respond with a life of obedient gratitude and trust in Jesus!
