THE VERSE

[21] Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
[22] The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

We finally arrive at the end of Psalm 34. These two concluding verses appropriately point us to the end of the road for two groups of people: the wicked and the righteous. While affliction may fall on both the righteous and the wicked alike in this life (see Psalm 34:19 for reference), we're also told that each will experience vastly different outcomes at the end of the day.

On one side, the wicked will be condemned. The wicked, who never sought refuge in God, will experience the justice of God their Judge. This is a hard truth, and yet in it, we see the holiness and righteousness of God!

On the other side, the righteous receive no condemnation. How is this? We’re told that “none who take refuge in him will be condemned.” As we looked at in the prior two verses in Psalm 34:19-20, being “righteous” doesn’t mean being perfect! It simply means putting our faith in Jesus and following Him as our hope for eternal life… The reality is we were all enemies of God. The Good News is this isn’t the end of the story though for those who find their refuge and identity in Jesus. The New Testament version of Psalm 34:22 can be found in Romans 8:1. Paul says:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Let that sink in… Jesus the Innocent One was condemned on the cross and counted among the wicked so that we the Guilty Ones might find no condemnation before God and be counted amongst the righteous. What a miracle! What a demonstration of love and grace by God! Take time today to thank Him for this redemption; for not condemning us and instead inviting us into His family. Pray that others would turn to God and find their refuge in Him as well!
