If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.

Let’s play a game of theological Mad Libs. “With you there is (fill-in-the-blank)…” How would you fill in that phrase when you think about approaching God knowing you’ve sinned against Him and others? Perhaps you’d say, “With you there is judgment… Disappointment… Resentment.” But that’s not what we’re told! We’re told that “with you there is forgiveness.” That though we, in the words of the famous hymn are “prone to wander,” God Himself is “prone to forgiveness.” In the Message, Eugene Peterson says, “As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit.” God’s native tongue is merciful forgiveness and He doesn’t have to work hard to speak it. Consider the ways you’ve been forgiven, and in turn thank God for His kindness!
