THE VERSE
One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple.
Though broken in countless ways, we are told that King David was “a man after God’s heart.” This particular verse in Psalm 27 helps us see behind the curtain in David’s prayer life and motivations. Though surrounded by opposition, darkness, and difficulty (see the prior two verses for more background), these are the words coming out of his mouth:
“One thing I have asked of the LORD, that will I seek after…”
Not two things, not a few things, but one thing. David was relentlessly single-minded; he had a one-track heart. This man was desperate not for his own physical comfort or his nation’s well-being, but more than anything else, he wanted to be with his God to gaze upon his beauty. “God, I just want to be with you. That’s my prayer. In being with you, I want to see and know you.” He knew he was created for intimacy with his God, and he wouldn’t rest until he found that.
Here in Holy Week, and in particular this Good Friday, we too join in David’s “one thing” prayer! Regardless of what’s going on in our lives and whatever obstacles we might be facing, we want to be a people after God’s heart like David. The thing we ask of God and the thing we seek after on this Good Friday is to see the beauty of God! It’s on this day we ask for the grace to see His beauty in the face of Jesus on the cross. As we look upon Him and His wounds, we ask the Spirit of God to give us fresh eyes instead of complacent or bored ones. May we see the Father’s love vividly on display on the hill where Christ was crucified! Let us not forget not all his benefits today by turning our gaze to see the beauty of the LORD in face of the Jesus. May this vision of our loving Savior on Golgotha stir us with wonder and gratitude again today and throughout our lives…

This song was written by Joel Limpic and then recorded in Lafayette, CO by Aaron Strumpel at Shovel Studios. Joel reflected a bit on this passage:
This verse and prayer has stuck with me for years as a prayer I want to pray over the course of my life. To be able to sing it and linger over the words through melody was a gift! I hope this song helps you dive deeper into this prayer and verse.
