THE VERSE

Todo va a un lugar; todo es hecho del polvo, y todo volverá al mismo polvo.
-Eclesiastés 3:20 (Español)

On Ash Wednesday a year ago we released a song written by John Petterson and recorded by John and his wife Casey for Ecclesiastes 3:20. In English it reads as follows:

All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.

It’s a sobering verse, is it not? The simple yet profound reminder that while no human is the same, every human will eventually experience the same thing at the end: death itself. Nothing can keep or shield us from it; anything in our power just delays the inevitable. Most people don’t know this, but this song was originally written in both English and Spanish, and the songwriter was hoping to highlight the simple reality that all people, regardless of the place of birth or language spoken, will die.

Ash Wednesday joins forces with this verse and invites us to stare at and contemplate death far longer than most in our Western culture do. It’s on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, that we consider our mortality, sinfulness, and need for a savior. You can find a link to last year’s devotional here. We believe that the realities highlighted on this day can act as thoughtful teachers in our lives if we just give them our sober and undivided attention. What great irony: meditating on our death can teach us to live well. Here are a few questions to help you in this process::

  1. Where do you personally experience your own “dusty-ness” and frailty today? Or perhaps around you?

  2. If you found out you only had 24 hours left to live, what would some of your greatest regrets be?

  3. Are there things you believe God is inviting you to give up during Lent so you can engage in something else? What might the Spirit of God be speaking to you today? Inviting you into? Convicting you of? What is that thing, or what are those things? Share this with a friend.

Last but not least, this is our first song that’s completely in Spanish! If you have any friends who speak Spanish, we’d love it if you shared this song with them…
