Psalm 1: Meditating on God’s Word

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
— Psalm 1 ESV

Psalm 1 holds up two different pictures for us:  one features a vibrant tree securely rooted by streams of water; the other of dry chaff blown away by the weakest breeze. So, how do we find ourselves looking more like a vibrant tree and less like dry chaff?

The psalmist teaches us that it all comes down to where we’re planting ourselves and sending down our roots! Want to know where you’re planting yourself? Just look at your thought and heart life. What are you daydreaming of? What narratives have captured your imagination? Where are you spending your time, energy, and money? Or as the Psalmist says, what are you meditating on day and night?

Psalm 1 reminds us that what we meditate on governs where we are going! The meditations of our hearts are kind of like a steering wheel. Our meditations put different destinations into our GPS and guide the way there.

Will you delight in the rich soil of God and His Word?

Our hope is that Verses would serve as a way to help those who thirst for God to meditate on His Word.
