THE VERSE

You shall be holy to me,
for I the LORD am holy
and have separated you from the peoples,
that you should be mine.
-Leviticus 20:26

Can you believe this is the first verse we've ever done from the book of Leviticus?! Our friends Tenielle Neda and John Van Deusen formed a power duo for this song, and we love how it came out...

This particular verse is central to the Old Testament, but is also quoted by Peter a couple of times in the New Testament. Peter uses this verse in a way that shows us that the "you" mentioned here includes not just Israel, but also those who would now put their faith in Jesus! This short but substantive verse summarizes much of God's mission for His people: to be holy. The word for holy means "set apart" and "different." We each were created to image God and look like Him in the ways we live. What a profound calling: to reveal to the world what God is truly like!

Not only does this verse remind us of our calling, but also of our identity. The passage ends by giving us the reason God has separated us:

"...that you should be mine."

We belong to God! We are His. Let that sink in for a moment. We are not our own, but ultimately belong to God! The true fuel of holiness isn't cold, rigid rule-keeping, but rather warm, heartfelt obedience that flows out of a loving and close relationship with our holy God, who wholly loves us!

Happy meditating...
