Psalm 62:5-7 Now Available feat. Adam Anglin

Psalm 62:5-7 is now available on all streaming platforms!

THE VERSE

[5] For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

for my hope is from him.

[6] He only is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

[7] On God rests my salvation and my glory;

my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Do you ever talk to yourself? In Psalm 62, David reminds us we should learn to talk to ourselves more often! What do I mean?

In Psalm 62:5, David speaks not to the people around him but the person within himself, his own soul!

In Psalm 62:5, David speaks not to the people around him but the person within himself, his own soul! He seemed to be encountering opposition and difficulty (read the two prior verses in Psalm 62), and instead of succumbing to the waves crashing in around him and throwing in the towel or going on a rampage trying to eliminate his enemies, he takes a stand speaking straight to the man in the mirror: “Soul, quiet down. Wait not in wailing terror but in confident silence!” What’s the reason for this quiet strength? Nothing about David’s own resume and fortitude; it was all based on who God was. David rattles off 8 metaphors and descriptions in 3 verses, all centered around God.

Not only does he rehearse these realities of who God had been, but every one of them is accompanied by a personal pronoun! My hope; my rock; my salvation; my fortress; my salvation (again!); my glory; my mighty rock (repeated but highlighting God’s might); my refuge. Charles Spurgeon comments:

Observe how the psalmist brands his own initials upon every name which he rejoicingly gives to his God—my expectation, my rock, my salvation, my glory, my strength, my refuge; he is not content to know that the Lord is all these things; he acts faith towards him, and lays claim to him under every character. What are the mines of Peru or Golconda to me if I have no inheritance in them? It is the word which puts the honey into the comb.

Work your way through these verses. Do you know God as your hope? Do you know Him as your rock personally? If so, where and how? What about knowing Him as your salvation? Your fortress? Your glory? Your mighty rock? Your refuge? How might remembering not just that God is those things, but ways you personally have tasted those things in your own life help you in times of trouble? In the words of Spurgeon, may this remembrance of God’s particular faithfulness toward you “put honey in the comb” in the present but also may they foster future confidence knowing that God will meet you in subsequent seasons and events.

We asked Adam about recording this song and anything that stood out about the verse or writing process, and here’s what he said:

The phrase "from Him" in the verse jumped off the page to me. Knowing that everything I need or want in seasons of waiting or in seasons of plenty is from Him was so comforting to sing. I wanted to echo this in the song as much as I could.

My process for writing this was to start with the melody free from instrumentation. Writing verbatim from scripture doesn't often lend itself to everything fitting together so nicely, so if I could figure out the melody first, and feel good about it on its own, I could build everything else around it. I recorded and mixed this song at home. My favorite thing lately has been using modular synthesis in my recording process and experimenting with different sounds. Letting the song take shape slowly. That kind of work tends to be a process of trial and error. Sometimes everything snaps in place and sometimes a song takes weeks.

I love contributing to Verses. It's powerful to meditate on God's word and see how the Spirit will stir my affections. It's so simple and profoundly moving. I'm grateful.
