THE VERSE

[7] Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

[8] Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

[9] Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.

[10] Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.

[11] Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

[12] Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Lent begins this next Wednesday, March 5th, with Ash Wednesday as the kickoff... It’s a 40 day season that leads us all the way up to Good Friday and Easter, and is traditionally marked by prayer, fasting, and generosity. Psalm 51, written by David after sinning against Bathsheba, Uriah, and the whole of Israel, is a psalm that often accompanies this season and frames it for us. It helps us hold a mirror up to our own lives with honesty before God and, in turn, invites us to confess and invite God into those places to cleanse us and teach us to walk upright lives before Him.

This song has been a wonderful way for me personally (Joel) to begin to prepare and till the soil of my heart as we approach this season. Whether or not you observe Lent, Psalm 51 is a prayer that teaches all of us to draw near to God in places where we've wandered! It points us to Jesus and His sacrificial work for us on the cross. As we pray and sing this passage, may He restore to us the joy of His salvation!
