THE VERSE

He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

These famous verses of Psalm 23 were penned by David describing the sort of shepherd we have in God…

Do you feel tired and worn out? He restores your soul.
Do you feel lost and confused? He leads you in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake…
Are you surrounded by a deep darkness? Even though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you can fear no evil, for He is with you.
Do you lack strength or wisdom to know what to do next? His rod and His staff, they comfort you.

Earthly leaders or shepherds will forever let us down, but not our heavenly One! He’s a restoring shepherd, attentive to our burnout, needs, and wounds… He’s also a leading shepherd, who not only knows the right way but cares enough to guide us as well. He’s a present shepherd, who doesn’t abandon us in our darkest times. Not only is He present, but a protecting shepherd as well, strong enough to fend off whatever it is assailing us. A comforting shepherd, whose very presence helps us let our guards down in order to trust.

Earthly leaders or shepherds will forever let us down, but not our heavenly One!

Consider these realities in your own life! Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. How have you experienced these traits found in these two verses in Him? How have you experienced restoration with Jesus? Perhaps you need restoring now? Ask for His Spirit to meet you. Perhaps you’ve lost your way. Cry out to this shepherd who knows the paths that lead to life! Walking through a valley season? Ask Jesus to reveal where He is with you right now… Feeling attacked? Look to Him and His rod for true protection. Receive the comfort of being at His side knowing that while you might know exactly what’s coming next, you at least can know His presence will be unfaltering!

This is our shepherd.
