THE VERSE

John 14:2-3 (ESV)

[2] In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

If you knew you were going to die soon but had a final evening to spend with your close friends, what would you talk about? What would you want to cover? Most likely you’d want to talk about things that were on your heart as well as things you’d want them to know for the future. Here in the gospel of John, multiple chapters (13-17) are given toward what’s known as the Upper Room Discourse or the Farewell Discourse. These are some of Jesus’ final parting words before heading to the cross… We’re given intimate insight into what was on Jesus’ heart and mind.

In God’s house, there’s no room shortage!

We find out from Jesus here that one of His roles after His crucifixion and resurrection is not merely as an intercessor on our behalf (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25, 1 John 2:1), but also as a preparer of rooms for His disciples. He’s a heavenly Host of sorts! We are told that in His Father’s house are many rooms. The word for “rooms” in Greek is “dwelling places.” In God’s house, there’s no room shortage! It’s not a cramped studio apartment, but an expansively diverse and sprawling house. How do we get to this house? Two verses later, Thomas the disciple asked this precise question! Jesus famously answered: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Through faith and trust in Jesus.

Jesus wasn’t merely merely preparing, but we’re also told that eventually Jesus was returning (“...I will come again”). Jesus wants us to experience the rooms He is preparing, but the heart behind this rings out: “...that where I am you may be also.” He wants to be with us. Let that settle in. Jesus wants to be and dwell with you! What a lovely and comforting thought. He isn’t setting up rooms for us only to leave to a different house, but He He intends for us to dwell with Him in His Father’s house. In the book of Revelation, we read of a similar future:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. [4] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

(Revelation 21:3 ESV)

Take heart, friends. In our Father’s house there are many rooms. There is a room for you and for me. Jesus is preparing us a room and one day, upon His return, will bring us into this house that we might dwell with Him there eternally.
